Eco Shop IPO Summary: Key Points and Exceptions

Eco Shop IPO

Eco-Shop Marketing Berhad is getting attention with its upcoming listing on the Main Market of Bursa Malaysia. Here’s what investors need to know based on its IPO prospectus:

1. Strong Market Leader

Eco-Shop holds a big 67.8% market share in Malaysia’s dollar store segment in 2024. That means it is the top player in this market, way ahead of the next competitor who only has 12.1%.

2. Good Revenue and Profit Growth

Eco shop Revenue growth 2022 - 2024

From 2022 to 2024, Eco-Shop’s revenue grew from RM1.57 billion to RM2.40 billion, and profit after tax went from RM27 million to RM177 million. Business performance looks strong.

3. Dividend Plan – But Not Guaranteed

Eco-Shop paid out 56.6% of its profit as dividends in 2024 and targets to give 40% to 60% of its profit in future years. However, this is not guaranteed and depends on company performance, cash needs, and board approval.

4. Easy to Grow Business Model

The company uses a “flywheel” approach—more stores mean lower costs, which helps keep prices low and brings in more customers. They also manage their own supply and transport to save money.

5. Simple and Effective Sales Strategy

Previously, most products were priced at RM2.40, which made it easy for customers to shop. As of April 2025, Eco-Shop has adjusted prices to RM2.60 in Peninsular Malaysia and RM2.80 in East Malaysia and Langkawi due to rising costs. Stores are in busy areas near homes, markets, and schools. The wide product range includes household goods, toys, and personal care—encouraging regular shopping and bulk purchases.

6. Who Shops at Eco-Shop

Eco-Shop mainly serves the B40 (low-income) and M40 (middle-income) groups. According to research, 47.4% of their shoppers are from B40 and 38.9% from M40. These customers look for value and stable pricing—just what Eco-Shop offers.

7. How They Plan to Use IPO Money

Eco-Shop will use the RM419.9 million raised from the IPO mainly for:

  • Building a new warehouse (RM200 million)
  • Opening more stores (RM56.3 million)
  • Paying off debts (RM100 million)
  • Upgrading systems and working capital

8. Things to Watch Out For

Some risks include:

  • Relying heavily on imported goods, especially from China
  • Possible issues with large projects like new warehouses
  • Debt levels are rising (net gearing at 0.8x in Nov 2024)

9. Who’s Running the Company

CEO Ng Kim Teng leads the team. The management has strong experience in retail and logistics. Good governance is in place, but investors should still watch as the company grows.

Conclusion

Eco-Shop shows strong growth and potential for dividends, though payouts are not fixed. Its simple model and strong market position are attractive, but investors should also consider the risks and pricing exceptions. Always do your research before investing.
